Find keyword ideas
The first step in keyword research is to get the “seed” keywords ideas. These are not the actual keywords that you are going to target, but they act as the foundation for the final keywords.
For example, if you are an expert in a field, you’d know the main topics of your niche. Use them as keyword ideas.
However, after a while, you get stuck and can’t find new ideas. In these cases, use the following ways/resources to get ideas for keywords:
- Brainstorm topics related to your niche
- See what keywords your competitors rank for
- Type a word on Google/YouTube search bar and note the suggestions
- Wikipedia’s table of contents
- Forums or conference websites in your niche
Analyze keywords using a tool
Once you have a list of keyword ideas, put them into a keyword research tool one by one.
You can use a keyword research tool like Keywords Everywhere that requires you to install a browser extension. It turns every page you’re on a keyword analysis page.
Let’s discuss the process with examples. The first idea is “gifts for.” We’ll search “gifts for” mom, dad, girlfriend, and boyfriend.
First, note down the monthly volume and CPC of the keyword using your keyword research tool. If you use Keyword Everywhere, it will make the job fast. However, if you are using another tool, it’s fine. It will give this data as well.
Volume is the number of times the keyword is searched per month. And CPC, short for cost per click, is the amount of money people are willing to spend on this keyword. These two metrics are the most important when it comes to keyword research.
You always want to create content around keyword phrases that actually get searched. The number 1 problem we see with organic search engine marketers getting started is they don’t use keyword data. They don’t do the keyword research, and they don’t integrate it into their site.
Let’s say you sell FPV drones. If you name your content FPV drone, it has the potential of reaching 27000 people (It’s the monthly search volume). But if you name it a racing drone, it comes down to 710 people per month.
All racing drones are FPV drones (first-person view), but utilizing the right keyword phrase will help you reach out to the maximum customers.
Now, you need to know how many websites are ranking for your keyword.
You want to find out websites with the exact phrase, with that phrase in the title and the URL. If you find a keyword phrase in the URL, it means it’s a highly optimized post. If you find a keyword phrase in the title, it is less optimized and if it’s on the page, it’s not all that optimized.
To find these things, search your keywords in Google like this:
In the case of,
Phrase match: “Gifts for dad”
Title match: intitle:Gifts for dad
URL: inurl:Gifts for dad
If you get fewer results in title and URL, your keyword has less competition.
At this point, our best opportunities look like gifts for dad and gifts for girlfriend. Over time we’re going to create content on all four. But the ones with the most potential are gifts for dad and gifts for girlfriend.
Select the keyword to target based on these:
- High monthly search volume
- High CPC
- It’s easy to rank for long-tail/specific keywords, but there’s no hard and fast rule about it.
- Keywords that are searched throughout the year
- Less Google results for title and URL phrase match
To learn how to target keywords on your website, there are two ways:
a) Identify the Parent Topic:
Let’s say you want to target a long-tail keyword – Importance of Website Speed Optimization- in a separate blog post. If you search on Google, you’ll find out that it’s a subtopic of website speed optimization. So, instead of creating a separate post for this keyword, it’s better to target this keyword inside a post about website speed optimization.
b) Identify search intent
What is that the user is looking for when they type something in the Google search bar. This will let you know what kind of content you should create around your keyword.
A Google search on your keyword will show you the search intent. Google understands what people are looking for. So do what’s already on the first page.
If you search “best burr coffee grinders” on Google, most of the results are review blog posts. If someone makes a product page around that keyword, they wouldn’t be able to get near page 1.
